South Africa’s 2026 FIFA World Cup journey got off to a disappointing start on Thursday night as Bafana Bafana suffered a 2-0 defeat to tournament hosts Mexico in the opening Group A encounter at Estadio Azteca.

A combination of costly defensive mistakes, disciplinary issues and missed opportunities ultimately proved decisive as Hugo Broos’ side finished the match with just nine players on the field.

Mexico wasted little time asserting themselves in front of a passionate home crowd and capitalised on a defensive lapse early in the first half to take control of the contest. The hosts maintained pressure throughout much of the opening period, forcing goalkeeper Ronwen Williams into several important saves to keep South Africa within reach.

While Bafana Bafana showed moments of resilience, they struggled to create meaningful attacking opportunities against a disciplined Mexican defence. Their limited chances failed to trouble the hosts consistently, leaving South Africa chasing the game for long periods.

The turning point arrived shortly after halftime when midfielder Sphephelo Sithole was shown a straight red card, reducing South Africa to ten men and making an already difficult task even harder.

Mexico took full advantage of the numerical superiority, controlling possession and eventually finding a second goal through experienced striker Raul Jimenez to strengthen their grip on the match.

Any hopes of a late South African comeback were effectively ended when substitute Themba Zwane was also sent off following a VAR review late in the game. The second dismissal left Bafana Bafana with nine men and compounded an evening that will be remembered for frustration rather than promise.

Despite the defeat, Williams delivered a commendable performance between the posts, producing several key saves that prevented the scoreline from becoming more severe.

The result leaves South Africa with work to do in Group A, where every point could prove crucial in the race for the knockout stages.

Bafana Bafana will now turn their attention to their next group fixture against the Czech Republic in Atlanta on 18 June, knowing that a positive result could reignite their World Cup hopes.

Mexico, meanwhile, will take confidence from a composed and professional performance as they prepare for their second group-stage clash against South Korea.

For South Africa, the challenge now is to regroup quickly, improve discipline and deliver a stronger performance in what has already become a must-win encounter.
