The City of Ekurhuleni has welcomed the rollout of Lenacapavir, a long-acting HIV prevention injection now available at selected public healthcare facilities across the municipality.

The introduction of Lenacapavir marks a significant development in South Africa’s ongoing efforts to reduce new HIV infections by expanding access to effective prevention options. Unlike traditional daily prevention medication, Lenacapavir provides up to six months of protection against HIV with a single injection, offering a more convenient alternative for individuals at risk of contracting the virus.

City health authorities say the rollout forms part of broader initiatives aimed at strengthening HIV prevention programmes and improving access to healthcare services within local communities.

Residents interested in receiving the injection are encouraged to visit participating healthcare facilities for assessment and guidance. An HIV test is required before treatment can begin to ensure that the medication is administered safely and appropriately.

Health officials have emphasised that while Lenacapavir represents an important advancement in HIV prevention, it should be viewed as part of a comprehensive prevention strategy. This includes regular HIV testing, consistent condom use, and access to other preventative measures such as pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) and post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP).

The City of Ekurhuleni said the availability of the injection provides another critical tool in the fight against HIV and supports national efforts to curb transmission rates and improve public health outcomes.

The medication is currently available at selected clinics and community healthcare centres across Ekurhuleni, including facilities in Germiston, Boksburg, Kempton Park, Katlehong, Springs, Vosloorus, Tsakane, Daveyton, Kwa-Thema and Tembisa.

Municipal health authorities have encouraged residents to contact their nearest participating clinic or healthcare facility for more information about eligibility requirements, availability and the benefits of the new prevention option.

The rollout comes as South Africa continues to invest in innovative healthcare solutions aimed at reducing the burden of HIV and improving access to life-saving prevention services. Health experts believe long-acting injectable treatments such as Lenacapavir have the potential to improve adherence, increase uptake of prevention programmes and contribute significantly to reducing new HIV infections in vulnerable communities.

As public healthcare facilities continue expanding access to advanced prevention methods, officials remain hopeful that innovations such as Lenacapavir will play a key role in helping South Africa move closer to achieving its long-term HIV prevention goals.
