Cape Town’s iconic DHL Stadium is receiving a significant technological upgrade as the City of Cape Town invests in a new energy-efficient LED lighting system designed to improve sustainability, enhance the spectator experience and position the venue among the continent’s leading sporting and entertainment destinations.
The project forms part of the city’s broader smart city and sustainability strategy, with officials highlighting both the environmental and operational benefits of the modernised lighting infrastructure.
According to the City of Cape Town, the new system is expected to reduce floodlight electricity consumption by as much as 50%, delivering substantial energy savings while maintaining world-class lighting standards for major events.
The upgrade includes the installation of 1,500 programmable LED lights capable of producing dynamic full-colour displays, allowing the stadium to create immersive visual experiences during sporting fixtures, concerts, cultural celebrations and other large-scale events.
City officials say the investment is not only about improving efficiency but also about ensuring the venue remains competitive on the global stage.
DHL Stadium has become one of South Africa’s premier event venues, regularly hosting international sporting contests, major concerts and community celebrations. The new lighting technology is expected to enhance broadcast quality, improve visibility for athletes and spectators, and create new opportunities for event organisers.
A key milestone of the project is the stadium’s achievement as the first venue in Africa to attain FIFA Quality Pro-certified lighting standards, reinforcing Cape Town’s reputation as a destination capable of hosting world-class sporting events.
The stadium’s new visual capabilities were recently showcased through vibrant colour displays illuminating the venue’s distinctive roof structure, transforming the landmark into a striking feature of the city’s nighttime skyline.
The City of Cape Town says the modernisation project reflects its commitment to building smarter, more sustainable infrastructure while supporting economic activity generated through tourism, sport and entertainment.
As the upgrade progresses, city leaders believe the enhanced stadium will continue to play a central role in attracting international events and showcasing Cape Town on the global stage.
“A world-class stadium for a world-class city” remains the vision driving the transformation, as DHL Stadium prepares for a future defined by innovation, sustainability and unforgettable experiences.
